APWA would like to remind our members of the availability of the first in a series of FREE on-line training programs designed specifically for public works professionals. Rolled out in December of 2010, IS-552 - The Public Works Role in Emergency Management, provides an introduction to the role of Public Works departments in community emergency management. The training is intended to help communities improve their emergency management efforts regarding the functions of public works agencies prior to, during, and after disasters.

APWA has been working closely with the firm developing these programs to ensure the content is relevant and accurate for public works professionals. Each program is pilot tested by APWA members (with a variety of knowledge and experience levels) prior to release. Currently in the development or testing phases are:

IS-554 - Emergency Planning for Public Works (anticipated release date December 2011)
IS-556 - Damage Assessment for Public Works (anticipated release date November 2011)
IS-558 - Public Works and Disaster Recovery (anticipated release date January 2012)

More information on the content of the future programs can be found in this brochure. You can also watch the Congress Continuing the Conversation interview with Gregg Varner, the subject matter expert developing these programs, on the APWATV YouTube video library.
